Back in 2004, Electronic Arts bought 20% holding in Ubisoft. Recently, EA has raised its holding to almost 25% and owns over 15% of Ubisoft's capital. Here's the story,"Electronic Arts has raised its holding of voting shares in Ubisoft to nearly 25%, and owns over 15%
of its capital after exceeding the 20% of votes threshold last Friday, according to French market regulator
AMF.
Back in December 2004 Electronic Arts bought a 20% holding in Ubisoft, which at the time was considered
hostile by Ubisoft, even leading to threats of its owners to step to the French government to stop such a
potential takeover. The increase seen last week, however, wasn’t an action taken by Electronic Arts. It
actually followed the allotment of double voting rights on registered shares that Electronic Arts Netherlands has owned for two years. Electronic Arts Netherlands now owns 6.99 million shares representing 13.98
votes. It has not bought any new shares of this type since August 2005.
So while a hostile takeover may not be imminent, according to Forbes, Electronic Arts did say it reserves the right to raise its stake in Ubisoft, depending on market conditions, over the next year. It has no plans to seek to nominate board members, but could do so if the are any major changes in Ubisoft’s
situation."
