The theme of war has always been a part of gaming. These games revolved around the times of WWI, WWII, Vietnam War, Desert Storm and so forth. And some of these war themes have been overwhelmingly recycled over to the point where gamers just get tired of it. But despite this, there have been some fantastic games that were developed and based on these themes. So here's the list of the best warfare games.
10. Vietcong For a FPS game based on the Vietnam war conflict, this game is the best by far. The scripted gameplay and NPC interactions created an environment that was fun to play and the graphics were pretty darn good for its time. The music and sound effects weren't too shabby either!
9. Tom Clancy's (Ghost Recon, Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell) From Rainbow Six, Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon, these games from the Tom Clancy series has produced some of the best warfare games. To date, there are 6 Rainbow Six titles, 4 Ghost Recon titles and 6 Splinter Cell titles. This is one heck of an accomplishment. It doesn't end there, a brand new title for this franchise is expected to be released sometime in 2008; Tom Clancy's End War.
8. Brothers in Arms Although the WWII theme was being used from left to right and all around, this game managed to pull it off. It was a FPS based on WWII about the true story of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division. What made this game stand out was its team command system which was quite unique and innovative for this genre.
7. Total War (series) For RTS games, this title brought the true meaning of ancient times warfare and tactics with incredible gameplay and graphics. It created an atomsphere like no other RTS tactics game you've played before.
6. Company of Heroes There's no doubt that this is the best WWII themed RTS game to date! Not only was the gameplay exciting to play but the graphics was absolutely fantastic for this genre. Unfortunately the downside was that you only played the American perspective for the singleplayer campaign. This game can definitely be made into a FPS!
5. Battlefield (series) Battlefied 1942 broke into the scene with its WWII themed FPS game. It was one of the best WWII first-person shooter which emphasized on its multiplayer mode. As with the success of BF1942, the series spawned several sequels which were also equally successful and each one was based on a different war theme or setting.
4. Rise of Nations (series) One of the few RTS games that captured the true strategy experience from different civilizations. The game was followed by an expansion and a sequel; Rise of Legends.
3. Command & Conquer (series) As for startegy warfare games, C&C exploded in this genre. Command & Conquer is simply one of the best RTS warfare games. And the original C&C was one of the first games during its time to use live-action cut scenes which were pretty awesome. The series produced several expansions and sequels which were a hit.
2. Medal of Honor (series) Medal of Honor: Allied Assault began the invasion of WWII themed games. It is one of the best WWII first-person shooter this genre has seen. The level where you storm Omaha beach is just like a replica scene from Saving Private Ryan and is one of the most intense and well-executed scripted gameplay in shooter history. This series continued to produce many expansions and sequels for this franchise with the latest being Medal of Honor Airborne.
1. Call of Duty (series) One of the finest FPS games that was ever made based on WWII warfare. As with each sequel or expansion, it is always guaranteed to be packed with intense gameplay action. Now with Modern Warfare, the call of Duty series is taking a different direction but from the looks of it, the same gameplay elements that made this franchise so good is still there!
